Podiatric Surgery

Though your feet can withstand a lot of pressure, they can also be pretty fragile. It’s not unusual to develop a condition that causes serious pain or discomfort. While most foot conditions can be treated with medication and other non-surgical treatments, sometimes surgery is the only solution. Types of Podiatric Surgery

Some podiatric procedures can be performed with local anesthetic, while others require the patient to be under general anesthesia. Here are just a few types of podiatric surgery that podiatrists often perform.

  • Bunion Surgery: Bunions, which form at the base of the big toe, often cause a considerable amount of pain. Bunion surgery involves an incision in the top or side of the toe and the removal of excess tissue.
  • Joint Replacement: Advanced osteoarthritis can cause exceptional irritation in the joints of the foot. Total ankle replacement may be necessary to stop the pain once and for all.
  • Joint Fusion: Fusing two or more bones together can eliminate movement of an arthritic joint, easing the pain. Joint fusion surgery is a common alternative to total joint replacement.
  • Osteophyte Removal: Osteophytes, or bone spurs, are small bone growths that can cause considerable pain if left unaddressed. Removing these bone spurs through foot surgery is the best way to eliminate pain.
  • Deformed Toe Correction: Hammer, mallet, and claw toes often develop as a result of a tendon imbalance. Most deformed toes can be corrected through local anesthetic surgery.
  • Achilles Tendon Surgery: Sometimes an irritated Achilles tendon can develop thickened tissue that applies pressure on nearby structures. Though most issues with the Achilles tendon can be addressed through non-surgical means, sometimes it’s necessary to remove excess tissue through surgery.
  • Plantar Fasciitis Surgery: Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the connective tissue on the underside of the foot. A minimally invasive keyhole technique can help reduce inflammation and associated pain.
