Whitestone got its name from the white limestone on which it was built. The Dutch were the first non-native settlers to come to the area. For years, much of the area was the estate of Francis Lewis, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Whitestone saw more significant development starting in the 1920s, and became known as an affluent neighborhood in Queens.

Today, about 40,000 people live in the Whitestone neighborhood. One of the largest Chinese-language newspapers in the world, The World Journal, has its headquarters in Whitestone. Famous landmarks in the area include St. Luke’s Roman Catholic Church and the Dwarf Giraffe Athletic League.
