Tips for Preventing Plantar Warts

When it comes to plantar warts, some people are more susceptible than others. The way you take care of your feet, however, plays a role in the chance that you will contract the human papillomavirus. Read on for a few tips for preventing plantar warts.

Try Not to Touch

As many parents tell their children on a daily basis, it is a bad idea to mess around with a cut, wound, or other type of injury. This same principle applies to plantar warts as well. Touching existing plantar warts makes you prone to experiencing new ones. Additionally, touching plantar warts on other people is not a good habit to practice because you may then find them on yourself. For this reason you should not share socks or shoes with other people; they may carry the virus even though they do not have any warts.

Stay Dry

A sweaty foot is more vulnerable to human papillomavirus than a dry one. It is wise to wear socks that absorb moisture in order to protect your feet from plantar warts. This is especially important for individuals who are particularly active. Athletes or people who are on their feet for much of the day should take action to prevent their feet from becoming overly sweaty.

Use Proper Footwear

College students wear sandals when they use the showers in their dorm buildings for good reason. Exposure to a surface that many others come in contact with can increase your risk for developing plantar warts. You should also avoid walking around barefoot, especially on surfaces that are warm and moist; these are the types of environments that the human papillomavirus is drawn to. Be sure to wear footwear whenever you use a public pool or locker room as well.
